Visit to Kenya from 5th-15th August 2011

Reception in Nairobi
We were received by the representative from Safari Trails at the Nairobi International Airport and we checked in to Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi. Day 1 arrangement was excellent

Commencing of Safari Tour

Day 2.
We left for Amboseli National Park and reached Amboseli Sopa Lodge for lunch. Mr. Raphael our Guide/driver was so friendly and we were very comfortable with him. On the way to Amboseli he provided very informative description of Kenya with us, and also its history, people and wildlife. Cccommodation, food and customer care in Amboseli Sopa Lodge is very good. In the evening we had a game ride and show plenty of animals.

Day 3

We had 2 game rides in Amboseli National Park as planned. We were fortunate to see small lion cub. Very successful visit to the park

Room

Day 4.

We left for Mt. Kenya and reached Mountain Lodge which is maintained by Serena Group. In Nairobi, our guide/driver was changed and Mr. George was taken up in-charge the rest of our journey. He also very good and was caring of us all the time. We found food is excellent in Mountain Lodge (compare to Amboseli). In the night we saw a heard of 19 elephants came to drink water. It was an exciting experience which visitors get rarely in this rainy season to Mt. Kenya.

Day 5-6

From Mountain Lodge, we left for Samburu National park and reached there for late lunch. On the way we crossed equator. Samburu Sopa Lodge is very impressive and unique architecture blend with the environment. Accommodation was very good and staff was very courteous. We saw all animals except cheetahs.

Cottages in Samburu Sopa Lodge

Day 7

We reached Lake Nakuru Lodge at lunch time. It was a rainy day. State of one room for one of our team mates received (Room No.7) was not up to the standard. Room was pretty old with bad smell. But we disregarded it. Lake Nakuru is a fantasy for bird lovers. We could see thousands of flamingos and pelicans. It is a birds’ paradise. We saw lions and black rhinos at Lake Nakuru Park.

Day 8,9,10

We reached to our final destination Masai Mara for lunch from Lake Nakuru. Masai Mara is very spectacular place and the best place to see lions, cheetahs, wilder bees, hyenas, antelopes, gazelles very big vultures,Hippos, crocodiles and so many animals. In the second day evening the park was wet due to rain in previous night. Therefore, our evening game ride was failed because our vehicle was 2 wheel drives. Skilled George managed us to take back to the hotel without stranding. Hence we recommend organizing 4 wheel drive vehicle at least for the Masai Mara, because we lost opportunity in seen rhinos, leopards because our 2 wheel drive vehicle couldn’t reach many places George has planned.

Fig Tree Lodge, where we stayed is marvelous. We got all comforts which is a dream in wild parks. Food was so delicious and we enjoyed Sri Lankan taste.

Conclusion:
We had a 10 day marvelous wildlife trip which was beyond our imagination. It was realy worth for the money we spent.

Our sincere appreciation is deserved for Mr. Bandula Silva, Director- Travelon, Staff of Air Arabia and Safari Trails in Nairobi for coordinating, organizing a wonderful safari trip to Kenya which will lasts in our memory for ever. Our team mates were in good health and comfortable throughout the journey. We look forward similar assistance and support from Travelon and their tour operating networks in the world in our future tours too.

Big Thanks for everybody for their untiring effort to make us happy.

Walk the talk: Great potential for sports tourism, says Eric Gauder * Only lip service, little or nothing done by authorities (This Article was extrated from the Island Newspaper article - 24th August)

By Harischandra Gunaratna

There is great potential in promoting Sri Lanka as a destination for sports tourism in the region and the country has missed out on these enormous opportunities which would further boost Sri Lanka as a top tourist destination in the region said former cricketer Eric Gauder, Managing Director, Travelon Ltd.

Realising the potential for sports tourism the country has, Travelon Ltd have embarked on promoting this segment of tourism vigorously and has brought a number international cricket teams to the country in the recent past and they spend much more than what an average tourist spends here per day , he said.

"The authorities have done little or nothing to promote this segment of tourism and other than pay lip service ," he said with regret.

"We just concluded a cricket tournament at the NCC grounds where 10 teams from Sri Lanka, India and Australia participated with around 140 overseas players visiting the country," he added.

The Australians stayed here for a fortnight and visited Kandy and Nuwara Eliya but were disappointed to have missed their trip to the Yala National Park as it was closed, Gauder said.

Gauder, the former Wesley College, NCC and BRC cricketer and popular international cricket commentator has used his contacts to generate more cricket tours by Travelon and a number of teams from India and the national teams of Malaysia, Afghanisthan and Qatar have already visited the country.

Among the top international cricketers who visited the country was former Indian star Venkatesh Prasad, who is the bowling coach of Afghanistan.

Each team would stay in the country for a minimum of two weeks and a number of cricket tours for overseas cricket teams have been planned in the near future and in the coming year starting from this month an average of 20 teams are scheduled to visit the island for tournaments organised by Travelon, he said.

There is a lot of money coming into our coffers as ground hire charges, umpires fees, meals during matches and accommodation which are met by the visiting teams and they will also spend on shopping and travelling to various sites of tourist interest, he said.

The cricket tournaments would feature a combination of cricketers of yesteryear and current players and it would be a great opportunity for them to play a game of cricket and get-together to renew old friendships and forge new ones, said Guader.

"It is not only cricket tours that Travelon will promote in future, but also netball, sailing. rowing, soccer,vVolleyball etc as there are so many untapped opportunities," Gauder said.

Bandula De Silva, Director, Travelon Ltd, said that the sports teams on tour would be joined by their families and the number of persons visiting the country as tourists would multiply.

Prakash Palande, the team manager of the popular team Cricket Gurukul and also represdented NIZ Sports of India who were in the island last week to participate in the tournament said "a high degree of bonhomie and carmaraderie prevailed on and off the field and more Indian teams are looking forward to visit the island in the near future to participate in matches organised by Travelon."

"We have spotted an abundance of cricketing talent in Sri Lanka and would help aspiring and underprivileged cricketers here with material," Palande said.

All foreign teams which participated here had a high opinion about the manner in which the matches were organised and the tours, and food and accommodation at the Mount Lavinia Hotel and the places of tourist interest and all of them want to visit here again, he added.

Preeti Chauhan, the team owner of Cricket Gurukul, who is already on her second visit to Sri Lanka this month said that they have picked 12 budding Sri Lanka cricketers and they are on contract with them for three years and Cricket Gurukula and NIZ sports will provide them with cricket material and would seek opportunities for them to play overseas as well.

She plans to bring a cricket team to Colombo every month and also would promote family members of cricketers and fans to also visit here and experience cricket, combined with tourism.

Murray Mc Donald of Hornsby District Club of New South Wales was overwhelmed with the beauty of Sri Lanka and the standard of cricket and the facilities offered. He said " I would certainly visit your beautiful country again for a longer tour."

Burmese movie stars wowed by Sri Lanka

Burmese movie stars wowed by Sri Lanka

‘We will do our utmost to promote tourism here'

Movie stars Thazin Zaw Win and Aung Thuya Ko(fourth and sixth from left). Others from left are, Eric Gauder, Director and Sega Nagendra, MD of Travelon Ltd, Myanmar film directors Soe Htike Aung and Hnin Moe and Mrs Nagendra at a tea party hosted by Travelon Ltd in their honour at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.

By Harischandra Gunaratna

Two leading young Burmese film stars Aung Thuya Ko and Thazin Zaw Win visited the island recently to gain a first hand knowledge on how Sri Lanka is celebrating the 2600 year of Sambuddha Jayanthi and possibilities of promoting tourism between the two countries. The duo visited the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya and Gangaramaya in Colombo and were highly impressed with what they experienced.

The duo have acted in a number of top films to their credit and are very popular among the youth in Myanmar.

"We will do our utmost to promote tourism between Sri Lanka and Burma, particularly religious tourism as there are large numbers wanting to visit Buddhist religious sites in Sri Lanka as Sri Lanka and Burma are two pre dominant Buddhist countries," Thazin and Aung told The Island Financial Review.

Their visit was made possible by Sri Lanka’s Charge d’affaires in Myanmar Niramala Paranawithana and Sri Lanka Tourism and Travelon Ltd, one of Sri Lanka’s leading travel agents and inbound and outbound tours to Myanmar were the ground handlers.

With the liberalisation of travel restrictions in Burma, a large number of Burmese have started travelling after a lapse of many years. There is a huge market for religious tourism in the country and they, unlike other Buddhist pilgrims, are very keen on going to places where Lord Buddha had visited. Sri Lanka is a key destination for this segment of the market and already Travelon Ltd has had a number of Burmese tour groups visiting Sri Lanka in the recent past.

Bandula De Silva, Director Operations Travelon and Aye Kyaw, Managing Director Rubyland Tours Yangon, expressed confidence that their alliance would bring an increasing number of Burmese tourists (leisure and religious) to Sri Lanka.

Aye Kyaw in a meeting with The Island Financiel Review in Bangkok recently, said that Rubyland Tours was all out to promote Sri Lanka as a tourist destination in Burma and has confirmed that he would accompany a team of top travel journalists from Burma to Sri Lanka next month.
